Law and Government Information

In addition to holding a J.D. and an LL.M. and having taught Legal Writing and Research to law students, Enid Zafran has many years of experience in legal publishing. She directed indexing and editorial work at Banks-Baldwin Law Publishing Co. in Cleveland, OH, for 13 years. She worked at Prentice Hall Information Service as Editorial Director of Non-Tax Services. From January 1990-January 2002, she was the Director of Indexing Services at The Bureau of National Affairs, Inc. (BNA), in Washington, DC., overseeing a staff of 40 indexers.

Indexing Partners has made its mark in the field of legal indexing by winning contracts for work with state governments as well as working with all of the major legal publishers. We have indexed the administrative regulations of California, Oklahoma, Ohio, North Carolina, Illinois, and Indiana. In 2003-2004, we worked with the IRS to provide a standardized vocabulary and approach to the indexes of their various publications. We have also indexed the Bluebook guide to state government in Oregon for the past six years.

We have written subject indexes for casebooks, textbooks, treatises, journals, forms books, and answer books. We also create tables of cases, tables of authorities, tables of statutes and rules, and other finding aids. My article on how to do tables in Indexing Specialties: Law, in fact, sets the standards for this type of work.

We also provide research and correction lists to reconcile variations in spelling or citation for the original material.

Public Policy and Political Science

Based in the Washington, DC area, Indexing Partners has worked extensively with publishers of materials on public policy and political science. These analytical studies focus on the institutions, processes, and policies of the U.S. and foreign governments. Works range from memoirs of world figures to multi-authored works by scholars debating current issues.

Indexing Partners' pool of indexers has the education and experience to handle these sophisticated subject areas. We have the attention to detail demanded by works with many foreign names. Our background in law is often very helpful when constitutional rights or governmental regulation are under discussion. In multi-authored studies, where terminology may vary from one chapter to another, we take special care to ensure that similar topics are matched up and linked in the index.
